Question

Landscape pages rotating to portrait using Adobe PDF printer

I'm noticing that when I use the Adobe PDF printer in Acrobat during a print job, some of the landscape pages are rotating to portrait.  Is there a way to keep them as landscape during the print process?

This is somewhat roundabout, but I opened my PDF in Chrome and used "Save as PDF" in the print options. While Chrome took a minute to load the document in the print window, once I hit print it saved the pages immediately, in the correct orientation, and without the often time consuming flattening process that occurs when printing from Adobe.

Hi @RollingGrayMan,

Hope you are doing well.

We understand your situation.

Just want to understand: Are you using a Windows 11 machine?

If yes, would you mind enabling the Windows Protected Print? This enables an enhanced version of Adobe PDF Printer, and might be helpful in preventing a lot of issues with printing.

More info about this can be found here: https://adobe.ly/44K0Clp.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Regards,
Souvik.

Is there a solution to this issue? I have had the same thing come up. I am needing to use the print to PDF function because it's the only way to reduce the file size down by a sensible amount. We have a lot of inDesign reports that contain PDF drawings, and when these are exported the file sizes are huge. Compressing only shaves off a small amount, whereas print to PDF reduces it by 75%

This proves that you do not use InDesign as it could be. Indeed, InDesign has all the possibilities you can have with printing to the virtual Acrobat PDF printer. You just need to set the correct parameters.

Hi there

Hope you are doing well and sorry for the trouble. As described the orientation of the pages change when you use the Adobe PDF printer.

- Is this a behavior with a particular PDF file or with all the PDFs that you try to print using Adobe PDF printer? Please try with a different PDF file and check.

- What is the version of the Adobe Acrobat DC you are using? To check the version of the application go to Help > About Acrobat and make sure you have the latest version 21.07.20091 installed. Go to Help > Check for Updates and reboot the computer once.

Also try the steps below:

  • Choose File > Print.
  • In the Page Handling area of the Print dialog box, deselect Auto-Rotate And Center.
  • Select the new page orientation and click OK.
  • Click OK to print.

Regards

Amal

The only pattern I saw was in the properties of the documents (there were thousands I had to print).  The ones that seem to rotate pages (even vice versa, so some portraits rotated to landscape as well), all shared one specific property.  In the PDF metadata, the PDF Producer field had this entry "Adobe Acrobat DC (32-bit) 21 Paper Capture Plug-in".  Which I assume means that this specific plug in created the documents in question.  All other documents that had no issues had different entries in this field.  I tried to Google this plug in but could not find much information about it.

Currently Acrobat is on version 2020.006.20034.  However, I tried this on multiple versions (some older and newer) and it still happens.  I also tried the suggestions you mentioned in terms of adjusting the print dialogue settings, still same issue.

Hi there

We are sorry to hear that the issue still persists. We see that you are using quite an old version of the above Acrobat DC, please update the application to the latest version 21.07.20091 go to Help > Check for updates and reboot the computer once.

Also, as described its an issue with some particular files, would you mind sharing a sample PDF file with us so that we can try to check it at our end.

Regards

Amal

Was there a final resolution to this problem?

I have been having problems with the rotation of my pages in Adobe for a couple of months now and the problem seems similar.  When I print a pdf using the Adobe PDF Printer sometimes it rotates all of the pages to be landscape even if I have explicitly clicked the portrait button and the print preview shows that the orientation is correct.

Once this happens I have not been able to ever rotate the resulting pdf to be the correct orientation- even if I can change the view, the document itself is still rotated so when it is opened on another computer or even in an online application everything is rotated.

I have checked to make sure that my version of Adobe is up to date/there are no updates available- and am hoping that there was a fix found for the original poster's problem that I could try.
