Large form: Editing a form back and forth between Acrobat and Word

I am new to paid version of Adobe Acrobat, so please forgive my ignorance. I'm also having a bit of difficulty explaining what is needed, hopefully someone will understand me.

My employer has me creating multiple forms that are 10-12 pages long with 200+ radio buttons and check boxes. There are concerns that they are likely going to wish to make large changes to the text of the base document (including tables and text) in the future and they want to know if the form can be brought in and out of MS Word as needed.

Here is my current process and what went wrong, for troubleshooting purposes:

Currently to make a form I have been converting the word document to pdf and then opening the pdf in acrobat for editing. I tried to test moving the form from Adobe into Word. I went to File --> Export to --> Microsoft word. I made some changes to the word document and then converted the document to a pdf again. This was clearly not the right thing to do, as it ended up treating all the preexisting form elements as flattened, unclickable, pictures.

I am on Windows 10 and have MS Word 2016.

Could someone please give me some suggestions for how to do what my employer desires in the most efficient manner? Any additional tips to improve the process would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

That's a bad idea. If you have the original Word file then simply edit it directly.

When done, create a new PDF file from it and then open the old PDF with the form fields and use the Replace Pages command to insert the pages from the new file over the old ones. This will keep all the fields you already added in tact. You'll probably need to adjust their locations, though, if the layout of the pages changed.
