Losing bookmark links after running pdf Optimizer to reduce file size

Community Beginner ,

I am trying to reduce the size of a pdf with bookmark links in Optimizer. I am able to reduce my file from 52 Megs to 5 Megs (which is perfect) but I only have a few links. Many links break after I run the Advanced Optimization. Are there any tips as to how I can preserve my links and still get the file size I am looking for.

Custom Settings:

     The following is checked

Images - color and grayscale -72 ppi

                         monochrome- 150 ppi

          Transparency      Medium

          Discard Objects

               Discard all alternate images

               Convert Smooth lines to curves

               Detect and merge image fragments

               Discard embedded print settings

          Discard User Data

               Discard all objects

Discard private data of other applications

          Clean up

               Use Flate to encode streams

In streams that use LZW encoding, use Flate instead

               Discard unreferenced  named destinations

               Optimize page content

Optimize the pdf for fast web view

Workaround: open the 52 Mb file, open the thumbnails panel and use "Replace (all) Pages" by importing the 5 Mb document.

And save as.

"Replace Pages" only replaces the layout (optimized pages) and leaves everything else untouched (hyperlinks, comments, form fields, metadata, etc.).

Hi lisam,

As per the issue description mentioned above, bookmarks links not working after running advanced optimization on a pdf in Acrobat, is that correct?

Could you let us know dot version of Acrobat and the operating system installed on the machine? You may refer to the steps given in this link on how to check the version in Acrobat: Identify the product and its version for Acrobat and Reader DC

Also, would it be possible to share the pdf file you are working with to replicate the issue at our end? To share the file here in the forums, refer to the steps given in this link: How to share a file using Adobe Document Cloud

You may also share the link for the pdf via private message - How Do I Send  Private Message

Let us know if you need any help.

Hi lisam,

Thanks for the info. Could you try repairing Acrobat using "Repair installation" option under Help menu, reboot the machine after repair and try again. Also, try optimizing another pdf file to check if the issue is not specific to this pdf file only.

Thank you, JR Boulay. I found your solution on two different posts, and it resolved both issues perfectly. This is great to know. Much appreciated.
