Making a handwritten PDF searchable (without OCR)

Hi all -- I'm trying to "digitize" a handwritten notebook. My client wants a digitally searchable PDF but would prefer to see their own handwriting. OCR does not work.

I am happy to transcribe the handwriting and append it to the PDF.

My next step is to try the workaround outlined here (https://community.adobe.com/t5/acrobat-discussions/is-it-possible-to-manually-add-invisible-ocr-text/td-p/10366341) but wanted to know if there are any newer solutions that might be more streamlined.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi there,

Hope you are doing well and thanks for reaching out.

You're correct, manually adding invisible text is a helpful way to make handwriting searchable.

Here are a couple of easy ways to do it using Adobe Acrobat:

1. Use the "Edit PDF" Tool

  • Open your PDF in Acrobat and go to Edit PDF.
  • Add a text box with your typed transcription.
  • Right-click the text box and either:
  • Set it as background, or
  • Change the opacity to 0% to make it invisible but still searchable.

2. Use the "Prepare Form" Tool

  • You can also use Prepare Form to add transparent form fields with your transcribed text.
  • These fields won’t be visible, but the text inside will be searchable.
