Question

PDF w/ intact hyperlink/fot

Running Safari El Capitan, on Macbook Pro; using Word for Mac version 15.28.   I need to create pdfs from word documents where 1) the hyperlinks are intact and 2) the fonts are intact.  (These are branded flyers for registrations, so both of those things are important.)  When saving as a PDF on this version of word, the font saves correctly since I have it on my computer, but the hyperlink does not stay intact...it just becomes text.  I have also tried printing to a PDF and then saving, to no avail.  This is a big part of my job, and it's not an issue w/ colleagues who use PCs...they can easily save as PDFs with those things intact.  I've tried free online services but they are not helpful as every time either font, formatting, or hyperlink has been messed up.  Is there an Apple workaround?  OR I'm happy to buy a product/software if needed so that I can do this, but I want to make sure that what I'm purchasing will DO what I need.  Advice?

Hi Suzanne:

How are you creating the PDF? Try File > Save as and pick PDF for the format.

I'm on El Capitan, MacBook Pro, Word 15.35:

File Format > PDF

Works as expected.

Also, you posted in the Reader forum, and you need Acrobat to create a PDF so I'll move this question to the Creating PDFs form.

Thank you for moving it.

I've tried saving as PDF from word (drop down menu at bottom). I've also tried printing to PDF. Neither retains the hyperlinks. They look like they are linked but they aren't. Apparently this is a mac word thing, Mac Word isn't that powerful. I also tried in office 365 and several online free PDF services. The ones that keep the hyperlink change my font (itc avant garde) to a calibri or something else ugly. Haven't found anything that will do both. Most colleagues have pcs where it's not an issue. Word saves as PDF retaining both.

So Office for Windows uses PDF Maker (a macro written by Adobe) that adds an Acrobat ribbon to the Office products and makes this (and everything else) very easy.

We don't have that on the Mac. But I thought this was taken care of a few years ago with the Save as option. A few thoughts:

  • Did you select "Best for electronic distribution" or "Best for printing"? (see my 2nd screen shot, above)
  • I found this thread indicating the VBA components need to be installed in Office:
Losing links when saving Word 2011 Mac to Acrobat Pro X 10.1.3
There is also a note from Adobe staff stating: Link feature is supported in Word for Mac 15.22 version or higher.
  • As a back-up plan, do you know there is a tool in Acrobat that can auto-create links in URLs?
