PDFMaker in MS Word is very slow with long documents

I'm using the PDFMaker add-in for Microsoft Word ot create PDFs. I have a 560-page Word document. When I recently converted if to PDF, it took more than 9 hours. This seems extremely slow. In the progress-bar message, when it marches through the bookmarks, it does one about every 20 seconds. Is this normal? Does anyone else use PDFMaker on long documents with better results? Any suggestions for where to look for what causes the slowness.
