Acrobat Distiller converts PostScript to PDF.

The PDF/X-4 standard supports live transparency and ICC color management, neither of which are supported at all in PostScript. As such, Distiller does not support conversion of PostScript to PDF/X-4. Distiller does support PDF/X-1a and PDF/X-3.

Exactly what application are you creating PostScript from? If you are using any Adobe application, you can obtain PDF/X-4 by exporting PDF from InDesign or saving as PDF/X-4 from Illustrator or Photoshop.

If you are using some other application and you have to create PDF via distillation of PostScript, a possible workaround would be to create PDF/X-3 from Distiller and then use Acrobat's Preflight function to create PDF/X-4 from that. Understand though, that the PostScript route will never give you live transparency and color management will be iffy at best. If your original content (in whatever application) had live transparency, it will be lost in the process of creating PostScript.
