Question

Polygon drawing trool goes beserk - had to use Task Manager to crash Adobe Acrobat to stop it - why?

It's May 20, 2023 using Adobe Acrobat Pro 2023.001.20174 and my first attempt to draw a polygon resulted in a runaway condition of constant drawing that could only be halted by:

  1. CTRL+ALT+Delete
  2. Invoke Task Manger
  3. Find the Adobe Acrobat process and "end task".

None of the following was able to stop Adobe Acrobat's polygon drawing tool from going completely beserk, drawing lines every time I moved my mouse:

  1. ESC
  2. Clicking on the polygon tool in the toolbar again, hoping it was an on/off toggle.  It wasn't, the beserk drawing continued unabated.
  3. CTRL+F4 (normal way to close a document in a Windows 11 MDI application such as Word or Excel).
  4. ALT+F4 (normal way to close a application in Windows 11).

I have two questions related to this bizarre situation:

  1. Why is there no way to stop drawing a polygon in Adboe Acrobat, either via some built-in mechanism within Adobe Acrobat Pro?
  2. Why does Adobe Acrobat Pro go into what appears to be a "system modal" condition in which all attempts to use standard, built-in Windows 11 mechanisms like ESC, CTRL+F4 and ALT+F4 are ignored?

Eventually, once my trust in Adobe Acrobat Pro has been restored, I'd like to try using the polygon tool again.  Right now, I don't trust it to stop drawing when I want it to stop drawing to bother trying it again.

Hi Frederick23877130wjl3,

Thank you for reaching out, and sorry about the delay in response.

We checked, and the feature is working fine on our end. We can draw polygons without any issues.

As the feature is not working correctly at your end, try reinstalling the application using the following steps:
-Remove the application and run the cleaner tool (https://www.adobe.com/devnet-docs/acrobatetk/tools/Labs/cleaner.html).
-Reboot the machine
-Install Adobe Acrobat Reader from the following page: https://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/acrobat-dc-downloads.html.

If that does not work, create a new user profile on your machine and install Acrobat from the above link.

Try the same steps and see if it works. Let us know how it goes.

As the Windows key shortcuts are not working, refer to the following help document for more information: https://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/using/keyboard-shortcuts.html

Thanks,

Meenakshi
