Prepare form not recognising checkboxes

We have a Word .docx document with multiple text entry fields and checkboxes. When we save as PDF (through Word O365 Version 😎 and select Prepare Form (through Adobe Acrobat Pro DC Version 21) the checkboxes are only recognised as images (or sometimes as tiny text boxes). This happens using any of the checkbox options in the Developer tool, including a Wingdings square symbol. What else can I try?
