Print to PDF Error: Invalidfont

Hi.

We have recently adopted the font 'Lora-Regular' for use on all company documents. When printing documents via 'Adobe PDF' we receive the following error message. This occurs with mainstream software such as Word as well as other programmes.

%%[ ProductName: Distiller ]%%
Lora-Regular not found, using Courier.
%%[ Warning: unable to embed font /Courier.Out of memory. ]%%
%%[ Warning: Courier cannot be embedded because of font file error. ]%%
%%[ Error: invalidfont; OffendingCommand: xshow ]%%

Stack:
[61 73 86 36 88 71 74 42 76 0]
(
)

%%[ Flushing: rest of job (to end-of-file) will be ignored ]%%
%%[ Warning: PostScript error. No PDF file produced. ] %%

The other software providers have advised that it is an incompatibility with the PDF printer and not their software. The 'Lora' font can be accessed on Acrobat and when using Microsoft Print to PDF no such error occurs. However our preference is to use the Adobe printer as we often find document issues with the Microsoft Print to PDF. Save as PDF is not a function on some of the software we use, so the error on the printer needs fixing.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Matt

Hi @Boqueron.1969,

Thanks for reaching out — sorry to hear you’re still running into this issue.

Even though you’re using a font from Adobe Fonts, there are a couple of key things to check:

1. Ensure the font is activated in your system via the Creative Cloud Desktop App. Adobe Fonts are cloud-based and must be active at the time of print/export for correct rendering.

2. Some fonts may have embedding restrictions, even from Adobe Fonts. If the print-to-PDF process can’t embed the font, it will default to Courier.

To troubleshoot:

  • Reopen the document after confirming the font is active

  • Try exporting to PDF via Adobe PDF Printer (not Microsoft Print to PDF)

  • In the PDF printer settings, try toggling the “Rely on system fonts” option (which in your case isn't working)

  • You can also check font embedding status in Acrobat via File > Properties > Fonts (You need to replace the font on the document level)

For more information on fonts, please visit: https://adobe.ly/463hAMi;

Steps for Replacing a Problematic Font in a Document

If using Microsoft Word or similar:

  1. Find and replace the font:

    • Press Ctrl + H (Find and Replace)

    • Click on “More” > Format > Font

    • Select the font to be replaced (e.g., the one causing issues)

    • Click “Replace With”, go to Format > Font, and choose a reliable, embeddable font (e.g., Arial, Calibri, Times New Roman)

    • Click Replace All

  2. Save a new version of the file to test

  3. Try printing/exporting again using Acrobat PDF Printer or “Save as Adobe PDF”

If using Adobe InDesign or Illustrator

  1. Go to Type > Find Font

  2. Select the problematic font and choose a replacement from the list

  3. Click Change All, then re-export to PDF

  4. Be sure to embed fonts during PDF export (InDesign: File > Export > Adobe PDF > Advanced tab)

Recommended Fonts for Maximum Compatibility

If the user wants minimal risk of future issues, suggest:

  • Adobe Fonts known to embed cleanly: Source Sans Pro, Acumin, Minion Pro

  • System-safe fonts: Arial, Calibri, Times New Roman, Helvetica

On a side note:
Preflight Fix (Acrobat Pro Only – Advanced)

Acrobat Pro has a Preflight tool that can analyze and report font usage, and in some advanced workflows, fix embedding issues:

  1. Go to Print Production > Preflight

  2. Use the “Fonts” profile to view font problems

  3. You can’t replace fonts here, but you’ll see which fonts are causing the issue

Note:  It’s useful to confirm the problem font and plan a replacement elsewhere.

Hi Matt,

I had the same issue as you. I am using Word. Here is what I did to solve it. Go to Print and select the Adobe PDF as printer. Then select Printer Properties. On the Adobe PDF Settings tab, uncheck the "Rely on system fonts only; do not use document fonts" box.

Is there any way of changing this permantely? I have to do this on each one I attempt to save and it's getting old.

Hi there

Thanks for reaching out.

Please check out the registry fix shared in the help page https://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/error--when-you-create-a-postscript-file-you-must-rely-on-system.html and see if that works.

You don't have to do any registry edits for a more permanent fix.   Just open "printers and scanners"  and make the original change at that level vs. the printer properties each time you print.

Hi @stephenw83610556

Hope you are doing well and sorry to hear that.

You can receive a PostScript error when sending a file to a PostScript interpreter (for example, a printer, Acrobat Distiller). A PostScript error occurs when the PostScript interpreter can't read the file's PostScript code. An error can also occur if the file's PostScript code exceeds one or more of the limits in the PostScript page description language. If your PostScript interpreter appears to process data but then stops, a PostScript error could have occurred.

Is this an issue with a particular PDF file or with all the PDFs? Please try with a different PDF file and check. If its a file specific issue, please share the PDF file in question so that we can check it at our end.

If the PDF file is protected/secured, please try to undo the protection and then try to do print to PDF and check if that helps.

Also, make sure you have the recent version 22.3.20310 installed. Go to Help > Check for updates and reboot the computer once.

Please go through the help page https://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/troubleshoot-postscript-errors.html and see if that works.

Hi Amal,

Thanks for your response, however this is not the fault we are experiencing.

If we produce a document with a standard font e.g. Ariel. and I print via 'Adobe PDF', my document creates a PDF file with no errors.

When using our new font 'Lora', I repeat the process but receive a notepad error message as provided in my previous message.

Please kindly advise.

Thanks,

Matt

Hi @stephenw83610556

Would you mind sharing a small video recording of the steps you are doing to print the PDF using the font 'Lora Regular', for a better understanding?

Also, please go through the help page https://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/troubleshoot-acrobat-pdfmaker-problems-office.html and see if that works for you.
