I routinely get large loan documents (150 pages) that contain pages from outside sources, usually a bank. In the middle of printing the file the printer stops when it gets to these outside documents and asks me to "Load Tray 1 with Plain RA4 paper." RA4 paper is 8.5" x 12". Since I don't have RA4 paper, I tell the printer to print on Legal paper in tray 2. It is a pain to do this each time the printer pauses to give me these instructions. Is there any way to program any part of this process so that legal paper is automatically selected whenever RA4 paper is requested?

This is something your printer driver would have to support. Acrobat does not have such a function. All it does is, ask the printer driver for the specified size of a page if you've selected "Choose paper source by PDF page size" on the print dialog.

Thanks. You're correct. I made that adjustment but the driver is not functioning correctly so I'll address that issue with HP.

I used to work with "production printers" (basically, really fast printers that can e.g. print your utility bills), and we had the concept of a "paper substitution", where a specific paper that was requested got substituted with something else on the printer. You will very likely not find such a feature on your run-of-the-mill printers.

I have an HP M606 enterprise printer which does claim to offer the paper substitution but it is not working. I am told it is a driver issue but I haven't had time to pursue it. Thanks for your reply.
