Scroll bar & plus sign for long text

I have created a form with multiple fields for long text. Most show the scroll bar when text is too long to display. However, a few also show the sign "+". I have copied a field that does not get the "+" sign to a new field and renamed it. The new one gets the "+" sign. I need either to set it up so all get the "+" sign or none do. Ideas?
