Question

searchable pdf

I scanned a 300 pages book with my hp printer/scanner (using the included hp scanning software)  and saved the scan as a non-searchable .pdf.

I am now trying to make the .pdf into a sercheable .pdf document. To do so I used Adobe Pro DC, because somebody told me it supports large documents, but my first two attempts failed (adobe crashed).  Now I wonder, how to do it ? Any help out there ?  Thanks

Hi Clement,

Do you recall the resolution you used to do the scanning? If the resolution is too low, it might be giving Acrobat some issues (that's my first guess). [BTW, I was involved in fixing someone else's similar issue of low resolution scanning and ended up having to do it all over from scratch, so be aware...]

Also, which software created the PDF? [Small fact: not all PDF creators are the same, Acrobat is one of the very few that maintains strict adherence to the ISO standards for PDF. It's POSSIBLE that the PDF has some issues that is giving Acrobat some grief. (That's my 2nd guess.)

Something to try in the interim: Open the PDF in Acrobat and select the Organize Pages Tool. Now divide the book into (say) 50 page pieces (you'll be able to combine them once completed, but regardless do this with a copy). Now start to process these pieces. Two things are possible: something in this book is bad and you might find that section 1-3 work find but #4 causes Acrobat to crash. If so, you can break this down to smaller and smaller pieces to try to find an errant page(s). (That's my third guess.)

And lastly, what settings are you using to do this?

Oh yeah, one more question, what OS (and version) are you working with?

Hi Gary,

Thanks very much, I think you went straight to the point,

The software I used to create de pdf in the first place was a HP scanning software I received when I bought the HP envy printer , btw it is a good software for scanning small texts and creating non sercheable pdf documents.  The resolution while scanning the entire book was set at 2OO dpi. I did not divide the scanned book into smaller pieces. The system I use is Windows7 64-bit

I'll try again by scanning directly with Adobe Pro DC at 300dpi resolution and dividing the book pdf into smaller pieces, let'see
