Hi

I am using (or TRYING to use!) Adobe Acrobat Professional 8.
But every time it loads up I receive the following pop-up message:

"A serious error has been detected and Adobe Acrobat 8 Professional cannot continue. Please re-install the application and try again."

I click OK, and then another message appears:
"Acrobat.exe - Application Error
The instruction at "0x05bf1243" referenced memory at "0x12284e88". The memory could not be "written".
Click on OK to terminate the program"

I have tried uninstalling and re-installing but the error comes back!
What can I do?? Can ANYONE help?!!

I tried something today, that once again points to the flex license manager - I installed 8.1, then the 8.1.1 update - rebooting each time and then before launching, changed the license service to run as my administrator account instead of the local account.

The software launched and didn't display the anomalies that were previously experienced. But, things were not working 100% either and various menu items froze. Interestingly enough, the service reverted back to the local account after a new user launched the software.

I tried several user accounts to launch the software and it either froze or crashed (closed out with no error messages displayed)

I realize software piracy is a serious deal, but come on now. I purchased this software in July 07 and this still doesn't work.

News - It works.

In desperation after trying every conceivable 'fix' on the forum and multiple uninstall -reinsalls, admin installs, disabling all services etc i have giot it running.

I asked our IT department to do a clean re-build of my XP image, this comes in with just XP and MSOffice, plus the usual network bloatware for asset monitoring, remote desktop and the BlackICE firewall etc.

I then asked them to install Acroabat before installing any other apps, they were able to install as Admin and Activate first time!!

The apps that I have not installed yet are HP scanner 8250 suite ReadIris Pro, HP scan etc), PGP Universal, Paintshop Pro, Access and Project, and my PCMCIA 3G/GPRS network card.

My suspicion is that one of these Apps does something that prevents the correct route to activation, prime contentder is PGP but I can't prove it and I am not going to try!

This might not help anyone else, but if you work in a corporate environment, where imaging is not unknown, then I would reccomend a re-build and install Acrobat as first app after re-build.

Acrobat 8.0 Pro on WinXP
The error message that was originally posted is still a problem fter the following:
Removed Reader version 8.0 and Pro version 8. all references in the registry for adobe. After re-loading just Pro 8.0 I made sure the FlexLic Service was running and applied the fixes posted in this forum that applied. Some of the fixes didn't apply as I don't
have the "suite". There is one recomended fix that I did not try, the reload of the OS. Since I cannot accomplish that right now I find myself at a loss for words and action. I do not however, ever see the activation screen that has been mentioned. I am installing
with admin rights and running the program as such. Perhaps I missed something but has anyone actually run into the same problems I have with Acrobat 8.0 Pro.?

As mentioned, I think you ahve the same issue i had with Acrobat standard. nothing works. I finally solved by doing the OS re-install, or in my case a new image for the machine. i installed no othr apps after the OS image, and it activated, I am now re-installing all the other apps.

It s apain but at least i can now work, i suspect either dregs of previous acrobat 5.0.5 installs or Acrobat 7, or possibly PGP, either way it seems that the something was interfereing with the ability of flex to work, and it is not the firewall I run as this is locked down a a system policy and is the same now as it was on the prior build that did not work.

Cut your losses, re-build the m/c

Thanks everyone for the additional info -- much of the help sounds a bit techie as I'm not accustomed to installing/making "fixes" to my computer as an "adminstrator." With a small company, we really don't have an IT dept. yet. I was hoping that I could figure out the "best practices" from Adobe's Forum.

Well ... before I proceed with my install, I'm involving our outside support person, James. Once I get the program installed ... I'll post an update so that I can add my "experience" to the mix.

BTW ... I'm curious as to the outcome of jeffj's conversation with the Adobe tech. jeffj?? Any news to report?

I just posted a thread that may be worth looking at for anyone having problems with crashes at startup. If what happened on my system has happened to others, this would explain why reinstalling with 8.0 doesn't solve the crashing problems that began after 8.1. I'm on vista but the problem I had could just as easily occur on xp, and the solution would be the same.

I thought I'd post a little of my trials and tribulations getting my system working again. I have been having the same 'serious error' discussed throughout much of this thread.

Here is how I got into trouble. I purchased an upgrade to acrobat standard (8.0 from 6.0) everything went perfect and the system worked for about a month. A client asked about the 3D pdf capabilities so I downloaded the 3D trial version. Had to uninstall the previous 8.0 standard. I failed to click on the deactivate button during the install as I would be putting standard back on this machine. (May have saved a bunch of trouble). 3D worked fine. Removed 3D reinstalled 8.0 standard and it would not load.

I read this thread through and through and none of the 'fixes' here worked for me. Probably just my luck. I think called ADOBE and they tried to help me(A for effort, D for effect). I finally stumbled upon the system restore feature in XP. I went back in the system log about a month where 8.0 standard was working. Restored my system to that state. Reinstalled 8.0 standard, and it asked to activate the software. Seems to be working now. I only spent 1 full day trying to dig out of the fix that I got with the 'free trial'. Not impressed with the overall experience.

Perhaps this can help someone else.

I had the same error on XP machine: Running Acrobat Pro 8 and Reader 8.1.1 - all updated using adobe updater. I was unable to start Pro neither Reader.

1. I reinstalled Pro 8
2. Removed Reader 8.1.1 (that was updated using 2 files downloaded from adobe)
3. Installed Reader 8.1.1 from the site

The problem seems to be gone... so, give it a try.

We have a volume license 8.0 installed on a 2000 terminal server. Ever since the 8.1.1 patch was installed that this serious error is occurring. Anybody tried the XP steps on a 2000 TS yet, or any terminal server?

Hi Everyone,

The patch which Adobe had posted on Oct 2nd. URL below:
http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=3750

could be safely used on Windows XP systems if the similar crashes, hanging behavior is exhibited.

=================================================================
Other possible workaround posted in earlier thread by Jeff Moran

XP Users need to use the steps that have already been posted here, but may be hard to find.
1. . Backup the following file, C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\FLEXnet\adobe_00080000_tsf.data.
2. Delete the file from the location above, but not the back up.
3. Reboot the cpu
4. Launch Acrobat and see if it requires you to activate again.
5. If it does, activate Acrobat again.

Other causes
MS LiveOne Care has been known to cause conflicts with Activation, along with other firewall software. Be sure to allow FNPLicensingService.exe

-Kevin Cheng

Kevin,

I have a win2k3 ts with the volume license edition of Adobe pro and this has not worked since purchased which has been over 6 months.

I have logged a support case, which was closed without my consent and all I see is Vista and XP resolutions (if you can call them resolutions) and nothing in respect to my terminal server issue.

I asked and will ask again, what about disconnected networks? In a perfect world we have Internet access to "register and comply" with license requirements! Not all of us live in the perfect world.

Signed,
Giving up and moving on

I've been following this forum for a while now and trying to keep quiet and let the process play out. Everyone has a breaking point. I've gathered as much detailed info as I can about the error that causes that ambiguos error message. The following are the outputs from attaching a debugger at the exact point and time of the error. If someone at Adobe would like any help with discovering more info about this error. I can reproduce it consistantly on a development machine with full debug capabilities.

Interestingly enough, I've noticed that with my installation, the error only occures when the application is not "Run as Administrator". If I right click the Acrobat shortcut and select "Run as Administrator" then all is well.

Maybe this is an issue with needing a manifest to indicate to Vista which OS level permission to which resources are required by the application or in some other way ensuring compliance with UAC?

Thanks for the advice John Smith ( John T Smith, "SERIOUS ADOBE ACROBAT PROFESSIONAL 8 ERROR" #304, 16 Jan 2008 8:04 am)

Interestingly enough though, there has been participation in this thread by Adobe staff. I'm not posting this to contact Adobe, but to clarify that the issue definitively resides in AcrobatFNP.dll as previously suspected by other USERS.

In the future I'll try to be less helpful and provide less insight into issue experienced by a community that harbors such unappreciative individuals as to ridicule a VERY detailed post for the use of 3 words.

You have my sincerest apologies.

Oh, get over yourself already

Commenting about the forum title, and posting a link to the page Adobe created for bug reports, is a long way away from being ridicule

If you want to rely on someone from Adobe happening to read your comments and doing something with them, rather than than using the page Adobe created for bug reports, that's up to you

John T... you are a little touchy, you came off as a Thread Cop or something. Adobe staff have been reading this thread. Derik you are fine with your posting, don't apologize. But John is correct, if anyone needs direct communication with Adobe for bugs, etc use the link he provided.

Has anyone seen a solution to this problem? My corporate XP machine got hit a few weeks ago. Like others posting here, our Desktop Support people tried to figure this out. They did all the reinstall-patch-etc.-etc. stuff that has been posted but no solution.

I have switched over to Foxit Reader for now (both Adobe Professional and the Reader were screwed). I agree that the problem seemed to start after a Windows Update. My Office got hosed about the same time and had to be re-installed too.

Doesn't seem to be a virus or malware - we run multiple protection programs and I did additional scans that found nothing.

Just wondered if anyone has found an answer?

I don't get the error that many have mentioned here, instead I have the problem of Acrobat needing to be re-activated about once a month on domain users PC's. But I belive my suggestion may fix your problems as well.

The information passed to me by Adobe support is a "dear john" letter saying that Acrobat must be run with elevated rights - IE: administrator or power user.

Granted - giving users elevated rights on their individual machines is a blatent security risk. But this and a few weeks googling led me to a possible solution. I believe the problem is Flexnet. On a WinXP Pro SP2 machine if you look at the file permissions of C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\FLEXnet you will see that users do not have write permissions. Why is this important? Well because that is where Acrobat stores the license activation / verification information that the flexnetlicensing service works with.

Vista should be similar since everyone is setup as a user and / or UAC causes problems.

Dear Kevin,

I have to say that I was horrified when my £400 Acrobat 8 Pro froze on the first start-up screen. I tried every conceivable solution I could find but nothing worked until I came across these posts. (http://www.adobeforums.com/webx?7@@.3bc421a1/267)

The issue was that there was a bug in the "activation" code and the activation window never ran at all, thereby freezing access to the whole program. Worst of all, I could not uninstall it either, no matter how I do it.

The solution posted by Ezzati worked for my Windows XP SP2 OS running on an AMD X2 5000+. I did not have to disable any of the processor cores so the numproc=1 step does not appear to be necessary.

I did stop the FNPLicencingservice process via the taskmanager before applying the patch in Administrator mode.

Thank you and Ezzati for the solution, and yes, the Adobe Acrobat 8 licensing service update for Windows Vista does work on Windows XP SP2. (http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=3750)
