Unable to sign pdf documents

When I create a pdf and need to sign the document, I have for many years selected Certificate, Digitally sign, draw the box, select my signature and enter password and the document signs. But recently after I draw the signature box the screen goes black and stays like that no matter how long a period I give it. I have uninstalled and re-installed the software, deleted and created a new digital signature but all to no avail.
