PDF/A is an ISO PDF subset standard for documents meant for archiving. As such, PDF/A files are not supposed to be edited per the PDF/A standard.

By default, Acrobat will warn you about this and remove the PDF/A compliance metadata from your file if you edit the file in any way. This is intentional.

However, you can (at your own risk) turn off this behaviour. Open Acrobat's Preferences and access the Documents tab. Under PDF/A View Mode, change the value to Only for PDF/A documents to Never. This will turn off the message and result in the possibility that what was once a fully-compliant PDF/A file is no longer so based on what and how you did edits.

We don't recommend that you do this.

thank you

it turns out my Microsoft Word option has the PDF/A so any pdf i created from word, which i want to edit at times in adobe, had this compliance on

i assume i mistakenly turned this option on one day and that if you save a normal Word 2016 it wont have this option by default

is that correct?

thanks very much
