When converting Publisher files, Acrobat Standard now produces much larger files than in the past

Adobe used to compress large MS  Publisher files of 50-100MB down to around 8MB for printing, and 2MB for emailing (Standard option). Today it will only reduce a 26MG file to 13MB for printing and 10MB for emailing.  Why has it changed? I have restarted the applications, and my computer, and am not aware of having updated either application. I don't have Adobe Pro. I need to be able to email both versions, hence looking to reduce the file sizes to something more reasonable.

Exactly what version of Acrobat are you currently using and/or what version did you use in the past when getting 8MB PDF files?

No recent version of Adobe Acrobat (either Standard or Pro) provides any support whatsoever for producing PDF files from Microsoft Publisher. If you create PDF files from Microsoft Publisher via the applications Save as menu item, you are relying on Microsoft's own PDF creation, in which case you should redirect your question to Microsoft.

The only other alternatives would be printing to the Microsoft Print to PDF printer (again, this is a Microsoft issue) or to the Adobe PDF PostScript printer driver instance (the only Adobe solution with recent version of Acrobat).

Please advise as to your releases of Acrobat and how you are attempting to produce PDF.

I use Adobe Acrobat Reder DC Version 2019.021,20058

In the Publisher document I go to Save As, then select PDF from the drop down menu, From what you have already said, this now sounds as if I should redirect my question to Microsoft.  Thanks for your help.
