Why is text so ugly in Acrobat, compared to Preview?

Like the title says: Why is text so ugly in Acrobat? Am I missing a setting somewhere? (You may need to enlarge the images to see the difference.)

The first screenshot shows Preview (left) compared to Acrobat (right):

It looks like anti-aliasing for text is turned off. Anti-aliasing makes text look smooth as described below:

To turn on anti-aliasing (Acrobat Pro):

  • Go to Edit > Preferences.
  • Click on Page Display in the left.
  • Under Rendering, Smooth Text - change to For Laptop/LCD screens (probably was on None).
  • Click OK.
