Word > PDF conversion: italics not coming out properly

New Here ,
May 06, 2023 May 06, 2023

Hi, I have a Word document containing some italics. When I convert it to PDF using Acrobat XI (either via printer or via the tab in the Word ribbon) the italics don't come out properly. The font is an OpenType font if that's relevant.

Here's the Word document displaying italics correctly:

And here's the PDF displaying italics incorrectly:

Both documents are attached.

Any advice?

Assuming you are loading the Turnip family from Adobe fonts, I can state that I have reproduced the issue, although it happens for me only for Medium Italic (other italic weights worked fine) and only when using the fonts in the Office 365 apps on Windows using the CreateAdobePDF. Other apps work fine, e.g. InDesign.

However...Same as you, printing to AdobePDF also did the same thing, but I found if you change your AdobePDF driver settings to deselect "Use system fonts..." it properly embeds the correct font. Give that a go.

I'm going to have a poke into the font file to see if I can find an error. I'll get back to you.

Hi, thanks for your message. I wasn't actually loading from Adobe Fonts but rather simply have the font installed on my system (in C:/Windows/Fonts) - does that make a difference? Many thanks

It shouldn't make a difference assuming the fonts you have installed locally are from a legitimate source AND you haven't also tried to load them from Adobe at the same time. this causes all sorts of confusion. Since I don't have the same fonts you have, I can't speak to your situation exactly, but the fact that I also had trouble with certain Italics in my situation using the fonts from Adobe speaks to an issue with Microsoft apps vs PDFMaker vs OpenType? Hard to tell where to point the finger. btw: I was using up-to-date Acrobat for my tests, so it doesn't look like it was sonething specific to your Acrobat XI install.

In any case: Have you tried printing to AdobePDF (with the settings change as I mentioned)?

btw: I did poke into the font files and found nothing amiss. All had proper style flags and embedding permissions, etc, so I saw nothing that could cause an Italic to be dropped in favor of the fake italic Word was giving you.
