XDP PDF not opening after upgrading to Adobe 2025

We have an XDP PDF file being used by opening it in Edge Browser with IE mode. This is working fine with Adobe 2020 version. We recently upgraded to Adobe 2025 version and it has stopped working. It keeps asking whether to open or save the file rather than just opening the file in Edge (IE mode). Is there something that is missing or that has changed? Is there a way to get it working?

Hi @47411676,

Hope you are doing well. Sorry for your experience with using Acrobat and PDF in Edge.

Let's understand why this happens:

XDP (LiveCycle / AEM Forms) files do not run natively in browsers. Historically, they worked in Internet Explorer or via the Adobe PDF browser plug-in / ActiveX control.

Even when you used Edge in IE mode, it was still relying on Internet Explorer components and Adobe’s legacy browser integration.

Starting with newer Acrobat releases (and fully enforced by 2024/2025), Acrobat removed all browser plug-in support, and ActiveX / NPAPI integration is no longer available; also, IE-mode hooks are no longer honored.

More info about it here: https://adobe.ly/4pGmvst

As a result, the browser can no longer hand off XDP files directly to Acrobat; thus, Edge now treats the XDP/PDF as a downloadable file. You see Open / Save instead of inline rendering

This is not a bug; however, the best solution here would be to use the Acrobat Desktop Application directly to open such files.

Hope this gives you some clarity.

Regards,
Souvik.

Hi Souvik,

Thanks for the prompt response. Unfortunately opening in the desktop application is not an option for us as the xdp file behind the scenes calls web services to pull data and it requires to be run in an online mode (In browser). Is there any other way that we can get this working? Or do you have any other suggestions?

Regards,

Madhu

Hi @Madhu_N G1676,

Thoroughly understand your situation.

If this were us, we would be more than happy to help you further.

However, since this is something Google has done on its end and disabled plugins natively in Chrome-based browsers, we have no control over how the browser behaves.
