Acrobat Reader opening issue

Could not open files with Acrobat Reader...got message: Reader cannot open not supported file type file damaged file type error etc...

One dowload said to download Acrobat Reader to be able to open their file. So . I uninstalled and reinstalled Acrobat Reader but still got the same issue.

It changed all my Google Chrome files icons on my desktop to Acrobat Reader.

I then downloaded the trial Acrobat Reader for windows 10 and still have the same issue. It changed all my Google Chrome files icons on my desktop to Acrobat Reader.

Adobe won't help me because it's a free app. It would greatly be appreciated if anyone can give me a solution. Thank you.

Just a couple of questions.

1. What do you mean by "Google Chrome Files". Chrome is a browser that opens HTML files.

2. Are you trying to open the pdf files from a website or email using Google Chrome?

3. The Acrobat Reader is free, there is no trial. What trial did you actually download?

I"m referring to what appears on my desktop. I may be using the wrong

terminology since I'm not computer literate.

These "icons" showed google chrome on them and now they show PDF. They were

saved to my desktop from emails or downloads But Acrobat Reader will not

open them?

Acrobat Reader is free, of course, but on the website it showed that could

download Acrobat Reader DC for Windows 10, on a trial period, but would

have to be purchased subsequent to the trial period.

Ok. So, you do not want to download the Acrobat Trial. You don't need that. You should use the free Acrobat Reader.

What exactly happens when you try and open one of those files with Reader?

It sounds like your file associations for some particular file type have been taken over by Reader. It happens and is not Reader specific. To fix that, right-click on one of the files then choose "Open with>Choose default program". Choose Chrome then be sure the box that says "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" is chosen.

This will put you back where you were but we still don't know what type of files those are and what really should be opening them. So after doing the above, right-click one of those files again and choose properties. The file name should be on the top of the "General" tab. What is the full name that is posted there?

When I click on the saved file on my desktop It does not open it and shows

the info that I sent you on my previous 2nd email. Acrobat Reader could not

open Air Canada-how to check in.html etc... Thanks

Ok. Sounds like those are not pdf files. Those are website links saved from Chrome. In that case, follow the directions I posted above to change your file associations so Chrome will open those files.

For example...I saved this info from Air Canada Website to my desktop and

the icon showed PDF on it but on trying to open it I get this message:

"Adobe Acrobat Reader could not open Air Canada-How To Check IN.html

because it is either not a supported file type etc..." It's the same issues

for anything else saved to my desk top. Hope you can help me. Thanks

Sounds like this one - https://community.adobe.com/t5/acrobat/acrobat-dc-stopped-opening-html-files/td-p/10255208?page=1 - so it's deliberate. You probably need to invest in Acrobat Pro instead.
