Adobe Acrobat Reader DC cannot open the file in Protected View due to a problem with your system configuration

New Here ,

Hi,

I am deploying 1502320056 version of Acrobat Reader DC to the machines at my work, which includes Win 7 and 10. It works fine on Windows 7, but on Windows 10 machines when you try to open pdf it says it stopped working and then shows the warning above to continue. It cannot open a pdf when the protected view is on and it thinks a file is not from a good location. I have enabled Protected Mode and set Protected view for files "from potentially unsafe locations". When i remove these settings it does work, but that is not a solution for me because of security concerns.

I installed the base version 15.007.20033 and then it worked as it is supposed to. So i started installing the .msp updates version by version that i downloaded from the FTP website. It worked well till i installed the version 1501020056, after which it went back to the erratic behavior again.

I checked with my security team, uninstalled McAfee from my computer still have the error. I am not sure what is the problem.

Hi shijilr24639727,

Could you please try installing the patch from the following link and see if that works?

15.023.20070 Optional update, February 21, 2017 (Windows only) — Acrobat and Adobe Reader Release No...

You may visit the following link which discusses the same issue:

Adobe Reader cannot open Protected Mode due to a problem with your system configuration.

Let me know how it goes.

Thank You,

Shivam

Hi Shivam,

I am having the same issue - just started yesterday - specific to PDF attachments in Outlook 2016. I have Protected View set to "Files from Potentially unsafe locations". I have Enhanced Security Enabled. Whenever I try to open a PDF attachment, I am prompted with the "Adobe Acrobat Protected View" popup, with the radio button selected: Do no open with protected view disabled.

I ran the patch you suggested above, but it had no effect.

Hi,

Kindly update your application to the latest version form Help>Check for Updates and let us know your version.

Also, can you share a screenshot of the error message you observe?

Regards.

LATEST

This is the popup - not exactly an error message. The only way I can open an attachment is to Disable Protected View from all documents.

Hi,

As suggested above please update your Adobe Reader to latest version . Also can you please let us know the following:

  1. Exact Outlook 2016 version?
  2. Is it outlook-32 bit or 64-bit?
  3. Operating system in which the issue is observed (Win10/Win8.1/Win7 ) ?
  4. Is the issue observed for all the PDF files opened from outlook 2016 or only some PDF files?

Thanks,

Shakti K

2. 64 bit

3. Win10

4. All PDFs, including ones that i have sent

Thank you for your help!
