Adobe Acrobat Reader DC error 131 when opening some PDF files

Guest

Good morning,

When opening certain (not all) PDF documents, myself and other users get a error 131 when trying to open the file. This is occurring in Windows 7, 8.1, and 10 environments with Adobe Acrobat Reader DC Version 2017.012.20098 . I've tried disabling the "Enable Protected mode at startup" and "enable enhanced security" options as suggested on other forum posts, but I can't seem to get this file to open with Adobe Reader. I phrased the end of the last sentence the way that I did as the file will open in Google Chrome.

Any thoughts on how to fix this?

Hi JoeAchille,

As I understand with the description above, you are getting error code 131 while opening a PDF document in Acrobat Reader DC, Is that correct?

Please try the troubleshooting steps from the following link: Error: "There was a problem reading this document (131)" | Adobe Reader, Adobe Acrobat, Adobe LiveCy...

In addition, you may try to install any pending updates from Help>Check for updates.

You may also try to repair the installation file from Help>Repair installation.

Let us know how it goes.

Regards,

Anand Sri.

Anand,

You are correct that that is the error I am receiving. However, I'm not sure where to find "Disable the Full Save option in the ReaderExtensions tool, and apply the rights again." Where is the Reader Extensions tool?

Thanks,

Anand,

No where in those instructions does is say where to find ReaderExtensions tool, and I'm wondering if this is an antiquated answer that no longer works with the current versions of Adobe Acrobat. Can you please give the steps to find this tool?

Hi JoeAchille,

In Reader DC File > SaveAs > Reader Extended PDF is the step to remove the Reader Extension.

For more details, please refer to the following threads: Remove Reader Extensions

Anand,

When I open Reader DC, initially "Save As" is greyed out. It only shows up when I have a document that is editable open. When I click File > Save As> I don't get to anything that refers to "Reader Extended PDF". It asks me where I want to save the file, and then it saves it.

Thanks,

Hi JoeAchille,

Please Set the "Default Page Layout" to 'Continuous' - instead of Single Page from Edit>Preferences>PageDisplay.

If this does not work, assuming the form is created in a LiveCycle, please share a sample PDF form which you are not able to open in Reader DC.

Send me a Private message. How to send a private message: https://forums.adobe.com/thread/1184148 so that I can try to replicate the issue at my end.

Response awaited.

Regards,

Anand Sri.

I have had exactly the same problem this morning. Perhaps the answer is just to use Chrome in future?
