Question

Adobe Acrobat Reader DC suddenly stops working

Hello.

I'm a student at Örebro University and I use Adobe Acrobat Reader DC almost daily to read documents from our professors, I use the highlighter tool to highlight pieces of text that I find relevant. But as of today (December 26), Adobe Reader has been acting funny. About 10-15 minutes into highlighting text, Adobe Reader stops working. I don't get a error message or anything, it just won't let me do anything and I have to force the program to close down using Task Manager.

I've tried to uninstall and reinstall but it didn't work, I tried creating the folder ToolsSearchCacheAcro but that didn't work either.

What am I supposed to do?

Hi Knightohwin,

Could you also check if there is an update available, Open Reader>Help>Check for update

If there isn't any update and its up to date then try resting the preferences of the Reader.

Solution-1

  • Quit Reader.
  • In Windows Explorer, go to the Preferences folder:

    (Windows 7 or higher) C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Acrobat\[version]

    Or %Appdata%>Roaming>Adobe>Acrobat>[version]

  • Move the Preferences folder to another location (for example, C:\Temp).
  • Restart Reader.

Solution-2

If that doesn't work, then-

Apparently I didn't have the Preferences folder. None of the solutions worked, unfortunately.

Adobe Acrobat Reader DC will not start / gone or corrupt / can't reinstall and claims it has the latest version

27-05-2017 or 05/27-2017.

I've been letting the Adobe Acrobat Reader DC automatically download the

latest version by default.

I had no issues until during this week. I didn't notice the icon until I

started maintenance, looking for updates.

Adobe Acrobat Reader DC apparently by my log, been trying to download the

latest version.

But it was never finished updating. I can also see it on protection logs

and system logs that it tried to do so.

The Adobe Acrobat Reader DC never had option to download it and install

over it with newer one.

But this has not happened hence the icon is missing and the folder of Adobe

Acrobat Reader DC is missing

the apps and only has gotten the latest registry and some update

definitions.

What I did was go to Adobe site and started to download the Adobe Acrobat

Reader DC and start the

installation manually and newer install over it. Programs and Feature,

tried Change to reinstall or repair,

but always claims that there nothing wrong with it. Went to folder Acrobat

folder and changed

the Security member of folder Acrobat Reader DC to me with full right,

deleted the folder.

C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\

- Alter Security member by right clicking Adobe Acrobat Reader DC.

Started registry and delete Acrobat Reader DC registry, went back to Adobe

site, and downloaded the Acrobat Reader DC.

Start the installation and finished. Tested it by starting Acrobat Reader

DC, starts and works.

- Controlled the Security member of folder Acrobat Reader DC. It had the

correct Security members, didn't alter it.

I think Adobe should include testing protocol on the installation package,

if the installed program works both in the beginning

and at the end, so users don't have to go through these when it falsely

claims it had the latest version that it does not

need install over / re-installation / or just make it optional to install

over to fix the issues from users endpoint, if installation package

does not want to install over to fix users application.

Anyhow, I hope people will find this discussion board useful, and resolve

your issue with your application.
