Adobe AcroCEF has stopped working after auto update from 32bit to 64bit Acrobat Reader DC

Acrobat DC has recently automatically updated itself from 32bit to 64bit, now when we open DC on the Terminal Server we get the error Adobe AcroCEF has stopped working and the following error in the eventlog. This happens on all terminal servers with the latest 64bit Adobe DC installed.

Faulting application name: AcroCEF.exe, version: 21.7.20091.59174, time stamp: 0x61397db1

Faulting package full name:
Faulting package-relative application ID:

We also get an error 'Adobe Acrobat Reader cannot open inside an AppContainer in Protected Mode due to an incompatibility with your system configuration. Would you like to proceed?'

a) Open Reader with the AppContainer disabled inside Protected Mode

b) Do not open Reader due to the AppContainer system incompatibility

I have tried both options here after reinstalling and AcroCEF still crashes. I have had to completely remove 64bit version from all terminal servers and disable Automatic updates via the registry as there is no option to disable in the program. I would like to keep Adobe up to date but not if it's going to break my Citrix application servers. Please advise. Thanks

Dear user, the fixes for this issue have been applied in the latest release so that Reader will not upgrade from 32 bit to 64 bit machines on Sever OS machines.

You can get the latest version of 32-bit Reader from:

Hi Nick,

Thank you for reporting this and sorry for the trouble.

The team is currentlly looking into this.

In the meantime, please refer to the suggestion provided in the following community thread: https://community.adobe.com/t5/acrobat-reader-discussions/disable-automatic-update-to-64-bit-reader-dc/td-p/12380707

Check if that helps.

Thanks,

Meenakshi

I also excluded Acrocef.exe from AV scans as well as excluding the Acrocef_1  folder location from AV scans but this made no difference.
