Adobe Reader DC can't open files in Microsoft Personal Vault

When trying to open a Microsoft Personal Vault PDF with Adobe Acrobat Reader DC (my default application for PDF files), I get error "There was an error opening this document. Access denied". I can oprn the file with Adobe Acrobat Reader DC when the file is not in the Personal Vault and I can open the file in teh Personal Vault with Adobe Reader Touch.  However, Adobe Reader Touch does not provide all teh features I want that are in Adobe Acrobat Reader DC.  What do I need to do to get Adobe Acrobat Reader DC to open files in the Microsoft Personal Vault?

I found two workarounds.

  • you can open the files with MS Edge.  You can print the documents from there.
  • The way I liked better was just to copy or move the files into another folder outside the vault.  They will open then.

A bit of an inconvenience but at least you can get to your files until MS does something to fix the problem

It doesn't sound like a Microsoft problem. If other apps can open the files then it sounds like it's a problem with Adobe Reader.

I agree.  Microsoft Personal Vault encrypts the files. I believe that the problem is that Adobe Reader cannot decrypt the files.

Would love an answer/solution to this question as I'm having the same issue. Didn't know Adobe Reader Touch works with it though, so I'll try that for now.

I'm moving this question from Forum Community Help to Acrobat Reader.

Not sure but I would think the Vault is stopping Adobe Acrobat reader from accessing the files. You have to Allow access to your vault> I would think you do that on the One Drive, your account, settings.

I would post this question over on the MS forums as it's a problem with One Drive not Reader
