I have been trying to re-install Adobe reader DC after a computer re-fresh with no success.  Message received is "a newer version already exists". I do not see this on my system. I am running windows 8.1.

Hey Tonyc,

As suggested, use cleaner tool to remove the application. If that doesn't help or you are still not able to install Adobe Reader DC, then refer to the troubleshooting steps suggested in the help article where various error message and cause are mentioned:

Error 1722 while installing/updating Acrobat DC/Acrobat Reader DC on Windows

Thanks,

Akanchha

Hi Tonyc,

Sorry for the delay in response to your last message.

Please share the OS you are working on? Also, have you tried the Solution 3 given in the help article shared above?

Additional: For testing, create a Hidden Administrator account following the steps mentioned below, and try installing the Adobe Reader in that.

Create a "Hidden Administrator" user account following the steps shared below and launch the application in that.

1-Hold the Windows Key while pressing “R” to bring up the Windows Run dialog box.

2-Type: net user administrator /active:yes

3-Press “Enter“.

Replace “yes” with “no” to disable the admin account on the welcome screen.

Thanks,

Akanchha

Hi Akanchha:

Thank you for your help.  I am  running OS windows 8.1.

Yes I have tried solution 3 as suggested and am a bit confused as to the "renaming" the files and what it means to do so. There currently exit many instances of these files on my system. I tried to download the C++ files and re-install Reader but with no success.

I am also trying to create a "Hidden Administrator" as you suggest above but when I hit the enter key after typing "net user administrator/active:yes" the Windows Run dialog box disappears and nothing else appears on may screen. I brought the Windows Run dialogue box up again and changed the entry to "net user administrator /active:no" and I get the same result. Tried to re-install Reader with no success.

I must admit to not being computer savvy enough to understand what I am doing. Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks,

Tony

Tony, here I think one of the steps was missed is: Once command was given "net user administrator/active:yes" need to reboot computer.

During Restart login screen will come up with "Admin" user name. Click on it to get into that, and try installing Reader DC here.

Once done, then you can use command "net user administrator /active:no" to disable it.

Since this issue has not been resolved yet, will check back with the engineering and let you know the outcome.

Thanks,

Akanchha

Wow!! That's a good news.

It would be great, if you could just share exactly which step helped you resolving the issue? This would help us understanding the root cause of the problem.

Thanks,

Akanchha:

I had done as per your last suggestion to re-boot computer after Windows Run dialogue box with "net user administrator/active:yes" appeared. I don't remember if I had done this (re-boot) on  previous attempts. However, on re-boot the login screen with "Admin" username did not appear as suggested.

Adobe Reader software was immediately installed on the re-boot with no further actions by myself.

Thanks again and I hope this helps you better understand  the issue.
