Adobe Reader Opens Large File but Cannot display Content

New Here ,
Mar 28, 2017 Mar 28, 2017

I am using a MacBook Pro, running OS 10.8.5.  I am creating charts as PDF files with my genealogy software (Reunion 11) and find that files of about 5MB and larger will open but not show any content.  However, smaller files made in the same way, about 2MB, will open and display the content.  These big and small files will open and display correctly using the Mac Preview application.  Is there a file size limitation for Adobe Reader?  I welcome any suggestions.

I wish to share my charts with PC users who will be using Adobe Reader to view PDF files.

I see what you mean and on the face of it the file seems valid. I'm able to open it using a PDF Debugger application and view the page, but Acrobat and Reader can't seem to process the contents, although they are there. My guess is there is something minor wrong with how the file is generated, or with how the application processes it.

I think this is something the Acrobat/Reader developers need to investigate. I'm not sure there's much we can do to help you with it...

There is no such size limit in Reader. Would request you to share the PDF files if possible, so that we can have a look at it.

Thanks,

Hi, thanks for answering my query.  Yes, certainly I will attach the PDF document.  But I am not sure how.  The insert image button will only accept files up to 8.7 MB.

Thanks, Robin

You can't attach files to a post here. You should upload them to something like Dropbox, Google Drive, Adobe Cloud, etc., and then post the link to them.

Thank you for that advice.  I have placed the file in Dropbox and here is the link: Dropbox - Graphic File.pdf

I hope you can solve the problem.

Thank you for looking at my problem.  I'm glad you can see what is going on.  If I reduce the physical size of the chart, not necessarily reduce the the file size, the problem goes away.  In fact the manual for the software that generates the genealogy chart states:

Another Note: Although Apple's Preview app isn't the only PDF reader available, 3rd party apps may or may not open very large PDF charts properly. As of July 2016, PDFpenPro seems to work with large charts. However, Adobe Acrobat Reader fails on large charts (in particular, more than 200 inches in width or length). GraphicConvert10 also seems to work.

I hope that helps to work out what is going on, or not going on.

Thank you for looking at my problem and giving me a honest answer, I appreciate that.  In the meantime I will stick to smaller charts.
