Since installing Adobe XI (11.0.03) when I open an exiting or new pdf on my laptop I get the message: Adobe Reader A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.
I uninstalled and reinstalled several times. I followed the instructions on the Adobe web site. Nothing is working and I need to be able to do my work. How can I get Adobe X so I can install that older version. Can't find it on the Adobe website. HELP!!

It is a link, not phone number.

I tried what was suggested previously by MWNZ , so I changed the directory "acrobat" into "acrobat-old"
downloaded adobe X ( after I removed all adobe reader versions from my pc,
still the same problem ...
I could try to download the version XI. ( 11.0.04)
but I have not much faith
Another thing I noticed, when using EXPLORER to go on the internet, not one single pdf will open.
But when using Google Chrome, sometimes pdf's do open !
when you try to download a text file for instance.

just downloaded XI again...still the same : a big grey screen appears for a few secs...and then it all disappears.
Not sure which version this was. Maybe someone could post a link here to go directly to the 11.0.4 version
but as stated before, I doubt that will help.
This has been going on since may 2013 now...and still no solution from adobe..
which is very disappointing
I am already past frustration, not a good sign I guess.

But your issue is completely different from the original problem in this topic.

"Not working" can have many very different meanings...

OK point taken.
But let's not go into semantics here.
Fact was I had a perfectly working Adobe Reader X on my PC with windows 7
After an automatic upgrade to Adobe Reader XI , I am no longer able to open any pdf.
And after uninstalling XI and reinstalling X, the problem remains...
So somewhere along the line a piece of software has been installed, that remains even after uninstalling, and affects the previous Reader version when reinstalled.
I am no computer expert, I am an end user.
My thought is : program developers at Adobe probably know in which directories software is installed when you download an upgrade.
Like MWNZ suggested : when you change a name in a directory which can be the cause of the bug, the bug might be neutralised.
I thought it was a valuable suggestion, I tried it, but unfortunately without result.
But at least he gave a suggestion to a solution
Given the fact that the bug remains, even after uninstalling XI and reinstalling X ( which perfectly worked before !) , people more knowledgeable then me on the field of software, might have ideas or suggestions where to look for the bug.
That's my point
But the fact still remains : windows 7 and adobe reader XI is not a happy marriage.
I'm really not interested in pointing fingers here, I just would be most happy with any solution that allows me to open pdf's again.

You can try using this tool to remove all traces of previous versions of Reader:
http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/acrobatcleaner.html
Then, download the full offline Reader installer from
http://get.adobe.com/reader/enterprise/
and run it immediately after restarting your computer.

I did solve the problem by following instructions to remove Adobe XI completely and install Adobe X (which took forever to find). I agree with other posts. There is a problem. I am tech savvy and tried lots of options. It would be great to get a response to this thread when I can install Adobe XI.

I was the original poster of this issue and the problem still exists. I uninstalled Adobe XI and reinstalled Adobe X to be able to open pdf files. That is the only work around I had success with. There is a problem with Adobe XI and windows 7.

I have tried the suggestion suggested by Pat Willener. Thanks a lot
..it works (i;m using window 7 64-bit)
(1) I opened the Eula.exe and accept the agreement.
(2) i've tried to open Adobe Reader XI and i can open it !!!
(3) Then click Edit---Preferences---Security(Enhanced) and unclick the Enable Protected Mode at startup.
(4) A box will appear and I just click Yes . Done ! ![]()
Thanks so much Adobe for helping me . And I hope this won't happen again for the next upgrade version.

I have a similar issue - I have a copy of Adobe Acrobat Pro 11.0.4 (on a Windows 7 computer) that worked perfectly for 14 months or so and then in the last couple of weeks has become flaky .. unusable. Most times it wil open an exsitng PDF and then stalls if I try to do anything other than look at the first page("not reponding message") and I have to start again. Files are OK since if I transfer them to my laptop an older version of Adobe Acrobat Pro works fine, HELP!!

Adobe 11.0.4 locks up after a few seconds of starting and changes to "Not responding" if you attempt to access any item within the welcome screen
At the bottom of this post is the registry fix to stop the lockup.
There is no fix for the situation on certain computers except installing Adobe Reader X instead of Adobe Reader XI. I put two different posts together to create this fix. This is a work around.
Installing Adobe Reader 11.0.1.36 worked without locking up
Installing Adobe Reader 11.0.4 did not. It locked up after a few seconds
Adobe turned on extended pane to be open by default on 11.0.4
Adobe 11.0.1.36 broke when I enabled extended pane or updated Adobe Reader to version 11.0.5.
I figured adobe 11.0.4 might also work if I turned that pane off. It did.
I found how to turn that pane off from another forum that the person simply didn't like that pane starting up.
Now adobe 11.0.5 works as long as that pane is registry disabled.
The strange thing is that I used the same adobe 11.0.4 install on several windows 64 machines with no issues. Certain machines did it.
Things tried that did not work:
Updated java
No java
No adobe JavaScript
No antivirus
No viper security center.
IE to defaults
Trusted sites lowered and adobe.com added
No adobe flash
Temp files all locations cleaned up.
Protected mode disabled
Enhanced security disabled
Adobe cleanup 9 and 10
All adobe folders renamed and adobe registry manually cleaned up.
Automatically update disabled.
Running the EULA.exe and accepting the terms
And a bunch more.
Adobe Reader XI will still lock up if I click anything in the Extended Pane: Tools, Sign, or Comment. Just don't do it and everything works. If you need those features, perhaps Adobe X is for you.
Open Notepad
Put in the data between the "======"
Save the file as "adobefix.reg" including the quote marks to the Desktop
Run the adobefix.reg file on the Desktop that you just saved
