Can't keep Reader on computer

New Here ,
Sep 24, 2024 Sep 24, 2024

In working on my own PC and on those of friends, I've tried installing Adobe Reader only to find it's actually Adobe Acrobat and it keeps wanting me to login.

I do have an Adobe ID, so I can login, but my friends don't, and they don't understand why they should need one in order to use Reader. It's almost as though Reader, as a product, no longer exists and it's become more or less a "demo" version of paid Acrobat.

While I can understand Adobe doing this in order to market their paid Acrobat product, this is a very sneaky bait and switch. How can I get Adobe Reader, install it, use it, and have it remain Reader rather than changing to Acrobat?

Hi @CTDeeJay,

I hope you're doing well, and I apologize for the trouble you've encountered with the Acrobat Reader app.

Signing in to Reader is required to enable features like adding comments, sharing PDFs for signatures, and accessing documents across multiple devices (Mac, Windows, or mobile). It also allows you to use Adobe's online services.

For paid services like editing or organizing PDF pages, a subscription to Acrobat is needed. However, the free Acrobat Reader allows you to view, print, sign, share, and annotate PDFs. You can find more details here: Adobe Reader FAQ.

To install Acrobat Reader, use this link: Download Acrobat Reader.

I hope this helps!

Thanks,
Anand Sri.

OK, so even though Reader is free, the user will still either have to login with an Adobe ID to use it, or repeatedly have to dismiss demands to login with one.

Understood. I don't like that as a marketing tactic, but I get it.

Hi @CTDeeJay

I hope you installed Reader from this location https://get.adobe.com/reader

Please note that when you sign in in Reader with a paid account, it will detect the subscription and ask you to upgrde to Acrobat. If you don't want to upgrade Reader to  Acrobat, please cancel the request and It will not upgrade.

Regards

Ravi

If I cancel the request, will it just come back up the next time I open Reader? How many cancelations will be enough to get it to stop asking to upgrade?
