Can't open pdf file

Getting an error :-  

Adobe Reader could not open because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged (for example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded).

of course. i am transferring documents from old laptop to new one via western digital external drive. when they come over they dont open

there is no text. it also doesn't show any file size next to the file
