Can't open pdf files in Adobe reader XI

Hello, I have a problem with Adobe reader XI, it is not compatible with Windows 8.1, no file will open. I tried to fix it but each time I was told to close all adobe documents while none is open. I often get a fatal error. I tried the troubleshooting by Windows and I am told that it is a compatibility problem. And in Control Panel, when I try to repair, I am told to close the Adobe files while none is open. I tried to upload previous versions but that is not possible. Help me, I can not work anymore. Could you please try the steps mentioned below?

1- Visit this link to download Cleaner tool: Download Adobe Reader and Acrobat Cleaner Tool - Adobe Labs

2- Run the Cleaner tool and then restart the computer.

3- Visit this link to download Reader XI: Adobe - Adobe Acrobat Reader DC Distribution  (select the operating system. language, and version from the drop-down list).

Could not open the tool. Nothing happened.

Adobe Reader 11 does not open but I can use the installed "Reader" app, which I assume is from Microsoft.

Hope you can get this working.
