Cannot open pdf portfolio using adobe reader X

Hi

Previously, I thought that having Adobe reader 5 or up is enought to be able to open PDF portfolio's created in Adobe acrobat X, though on a differing level of view depending on the Adobe reader version.

My Problem is, I tried to open a PDF portfolio, I have Adobe Reader X and it came up with an error.

Newbie question, So, to view portfolios or any PDF's with flash etc, the ussual Reader would no longer suffice?

Thanks for the replies. Dave, thanks for the really helpful link.

The problem that this has created is for some guys who are previously sending reports (multiple pdf's/portfolio) to their clients in a hassle free way since it only requires the client (recipient) to have Adobe Reader installed. Now it requires another program as it was sort of separated from the Reader family. Previously, instead of having the ussual coversheet for the PDF portfolio to include that it is best to view on the latest version of Adobe Reader or Acrobat, will now need to include the latest version of Flash player as well.

I have not tested yet, though probably on another topic, but does this also affect if you are planning to open a PDF created in Indesign and given the format of  "page flip"?

Dave, do you have any tips on a possible workaround or atleast creating a pdf portfolio or any PDF document with SWF/flash capability to be user friendly or less hassle for a recipient to open?

I am really sorry if I have a lot of questions =(

Thank you, Dave.  This problem had my mind running in circles.  I was able to open the portfolio in Acrobat X Pro, but not in Reader X.  The client with Reader was constantly being asked to install Nuance, which I definitely did not want to do.  In this state, all you could see was a cover page without any of the intended content.

The link you provided was extermely informative and led me to a very simple fix to allow Reader X to view portfolios: install the browser plugin version of Flash (i.e., the version required to view PDFs in browsers like Chrome or Firefox).  After that, Reader didn't have any problems viewing the portfolio.  The only problem now is that the client requires two updates every time that a Flash update is released... lesser of two evils, really.

Follow this steps to view pdfs in portfolio using Adobe Reader.

1. Open the portfolio.pdf file in Adobe Reader.

2. Select View, Portfolio and check Details from the main menu. A search box will appear on the top right. Enter the letter 'a', click on the down arrow beside the binoculars and select "Search Entire Portfolio'. Click the binocular icon.

3. All the embedded pdf files will appear in the window. You can change the sort preference to "by filename" and extend the search window.

4. Click on the pdf file to view.

For you information I use "a" as a wildcard.

Thanks bluebird! This has been driving me nuts, and the so called "experts" here haven't been able to help.  This is the fix that works without having to get IT to do anything else.
