We racked our brains around this one (and our vendor did as well) for weeks. Finally found the solution to this issue we were having. Our people that process loan application paperwork have PDFs that sometimes have checkboxes on them where they need to select them. Anyone on Reader 11 had the issue where it was VERY difficult to click on the checkboxes at some times. Then we discovered a difference in the tooltip. The tooltip will show the field name when it works, but when they were having difficulty the tooltip would show "background" in it, and an additional dotted boarder was around the check box.
It turns out the fix was to go into Edit > Preferences > Accessibility and UNCHECK "Enable assistive technology support." In all cases this fixed our problem.
I just wanted to share this in case anyone had this issue and needed to find a resolution. Here we were trying all kinds of things like adobe cleanup tools, java versions, revo uninstallers, ccleaner, new windows profiles, etc... and it was something as simple as a check box.
