digital signature field under certificates greyed out (adobe DC)

I need to digitally sign some documents with my digital signature that is stored on my Common Access Card, however the digitally sign option in the certificates tool bar is greyed out. I have seen multiple people fixing this by adding a "wet" style signature but that does not work for my purposes. I have signature certificates already set up and have signed them in the past.
