Embedded full screen mode leads to black screen

Hello

Subject:
Adobe Acrobat Reader, Continuous Release, 2023.0008.20555 64-bit

Problem description:
As soon as I open the fullscreen_dummy.pdf I get a black screen..

The PDF is not displayed, everything is black.

It is also not possible to exit fullscreen mode with ESC, mouse buttons do not work. Exit only possible with ALT+F4 or task manager

Reproduce the problem:

  1.  Use the old Adobe Reader Desing -> "Disable New Acrobat"
  2.  Start Adobe Reader -> Settings -> Full screen
"Warn when a document is automatically displayed in full screen...." = OFF
The problem only appears if this option is deactivated!
  3.  Close Adobe Reader
  4.  Make sure that Adobe Reader is set as the default viewer for PDF.
  5.  Open fullscreen_dummy.pdf (double-click)
  6.  Adobe Reader is started in full screen and I get a completely black screen.

Notes:

  • The problem does not occur with Adobe Reader Pro.
  • If I start Adobe Reader first and open the document via "Open file", the problem does not occur.
  • With the new Adobe Reader Design, the PDF is displayed to me, has artifacts of the side menu, ESC keys and mouse buttons do not work. Exit with Alt+F4 or task manager.

Can anyone test this?
Does anyone else have this problem?

Regards Patrick

I have already tried the following:

  • Adobe reader to repair
  • Completely reinstall Adobe reader

This did not solve the problem.

Similar problem here, just started this week. Downloaded newspaper pdf. Open pdf, use Ctrl H to go to full screen. This works fine but if I hit Esc to exit full screen, the pdf goes black. Thought it might be the new Chrome update so I tried downloading from Edge browser. Same thing happened.

Is this a way to entice us to pay for Acrobat Pro?

I solved the problem - I stopped using Adobe reader and switched to Microsoft Edge pdf viewer.

Somehow "Ctrl-0" (Zoom to Page Level) [that's a zero, not a letter] seems to un-freeze the black screen of death.

Hi @JohnGman,

Hope you are doing well.

Thanks for sharing the link to the UserVoice post on the issue.

However, this seems to be fixed with the subsequent versions.

Do you still see this issue? If yes, would you mind sharing a few more pieces of information for further investigation:

1. The app version of Acrobat you use (go to Menu> Help> About Acrobat);

2. A screen recording of the issue for better understanding.

Also, ensure that you are on the latest version of Acrobat (2025.001.20458) for the best experience.

To do so, go to Menu> Help> Check for Updates.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Regards,
Souvik.
