Error 1606 - Adobe Reader Upgrade Fails

New Here ,
Feb 19, 2008 Feb 19, 2008
I keep getting the dreaded "Error 1606 Could not access network
location :." (sic)when I try to upgrade Acrobat Reader

I've tried all the fixes i.e. deleting registry refs to Office 8.0 and
9.0, checking User Shell Folders and Common Administrative Tools (as recommended by Microsoft) but none works.

Also I've no idea what location ":." refers to.

Apart from disabling Windows Installer (to stop it popping up
randomly) I cannot update my Adobe Reader software.

Any miracle workers out there?

Thanks

Pat: Thanks for your reply. I've tried all of the MSoft recommendations.

I tried to uninstall my current Reader version today (to replace with the latest version) but I can't even uninstall it - I get the same Error 1606.

Where does your %APPDATA% point to? (Type it into Windows Explorer's address bar, then see where it goes.)

P.S. please do not type in all CAPS - it is very difficult to read!

Thanks Maryanne.

I did use microsoft knowledgebase 886549, but first backed up registry following 322756 just to be safe.

My Adobe Reader 9.1 is up and running.

Namaste Maryanne,

I've had the same problem, with adobe 10.0.1 luckily it hasn't been months yet but it's still a major problem since it is required for my online classes everyday.

I tried editting the registry files manually and through the "fix it" button and I still recieve the error message. My registry files match the ones provided from the link and still no change. Any other ideas, can it be done without taking my computer to a specialist.

Thanks,

~Kevin~

yes, I did it without taking it to a computer person, and it took a few days of investigation I thought I put the answer on the page.

It would really be much better for everyone if you started a new topic, instead of resurrecting a 3 year old thread.

Post all information, and someone will help you.

Try this out:  http://www.majorgeeks.com/Windows_Installer_CleanUp_Utility_d4459.html

I was having the same problem using XP professional with Adobe 10.0.1

IT WORKED PERFECTLY AND INSTANTLY.  And that was after spending days researching and trying different fixes as mentioned in the other responses.  I believe this is that ABSOLUTE solution.  Good Luck!
