Error message when downloading PDF

Whenever I try to "open in Acrobat" I get the error message "There was an error opening this document. An error occurred while downloading. Please try again." I am running current Mac OS and the newest version of Adobe Reader DC.

Solved! I wasn't signed in.

But I only found that out circuitously. Adobe should alert the user that login is necessary instead of sending an uninformative error message.
