I am using this for sewing patterns on a projector. When I hide layers I don't want to see, they still show up on the saved pdf. How do I make sure the hidden layers stay hidden when saving. I tried sending it to my email, but the hidden layers still show up when opening the pdf. When I try to save the pdf in the printer app, I recieve a message that function is not supported. I am workin on a macbook pro.

Do you have Acrobat or the free Acrobat Reader? It can only be done in the former.

In any case the visibility of layers is not saved after they have been displayed/hidden by the user by using the checkboxes displaying an eye.
This is handled by their “default state”, which is only accessible with Acrobat Pro or Acrobat Standard.
If you want the display selected by the user (including with Acrobat Reader) to be restored the next time the document is opened, you need to use JavaScripts.
Low-end PDF readers (such as Apple Preview) don't handle PDF layers and systematically display them all.
