Hide Tools pane

Community Beginner ,
Mar 11, 2019 Mar 11, 2019

I would like to not have the Tools pane open every time I open a new document in Adobe Acrobat Reader DC. My version is up to date. The guidance on the Adobe website does not work: Permanently close the Tools pane in Acrobat Reader DC

You cannot actually follow this guidance. You cannot open a document when you have the Preferences open, which is what this tells you to do.

Please tell me what the magic is to have the Tools pane not open.

Hello Ksma,

We're sorry for the trouble you are having with Adobe Reader.

Please close any PDF file opened in Adobe Reader, then Hide the Right-hand tool pane.

Go to Eidt>Preferences>Documents, and then select Remember the current state of Tools pane.

Click OK.

Acrobat Reader now remembers the state of your Tools pane. If it was collapsed (or expanded) during the last launch, it remains collapsed (or expanded) when you launch again.

Note: However, do remember that if you unhide the Tools pane and exit the application, it starts showing up automatically once again. If that happens, it’s simply a matter of hiding the pane normally to make Adobe Reader DC remember your action.

What is the version of Adobe Reader installed? To identify the verison details, take help from the article Identify the product and its version for Acrobat and Reader DC

Are you on Windows or Mac machine and what is the verison?

We're here to help, let us know if you experience any issue.

Thanks,

Anand Sri.

Thank you for your guidance. I followed your instructions, but the Tools pane still opens.

I am on Windows. Acrobat Reader DC version 2019.010.20098. I also checked for updates using the Help menu. It is up to date.

When I close my open PDF file, the Tools pane does not show. A list of Recent documents shows.

I closed the open document. Went to Edit>Preference>Documents and selected "Remember current state of Tools Pane." Selected OK.

When I again open my document from the Current list, the Tools pane shows.

If I exit Reader after doing the "Remember ..." steps and then reopen it by clicking on a PDF file, the Tools pane is open. Basically, no matter what I do, the Tools pane is open every time.

I have tried this with several different documents. They all do the same thing.

When you look in Preferences, after you restart a Reader, has the setting gone back to its old value (or Does it remember the Preferences change?)

It does not remember the Preference. It is unchecked, again, most of time. Sometimes it is still checked. No consistency.

Ok, it looks as if your real problem is that preference changes are not being saved. If they aren't saved, they won't have an effect. I'm not sure what to suggest to fix that, though.
