In Windows, highlight a PDF, right click and choose "Open with>Choose default program" in the dropdown. Choose REader then check the box that says "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file".

Very helpful, slight change, after right clicking PDF causing list of possible programs, go to    Open With, then when the list comes up do not click on desired program, scan down to the bottom of pop up menu to Choose program, right click that causing another menu "Open with" window, then selectr Adobe from the list and also click the box to the left of "Always use this selected program to open this kind of file", and then click OK.

These variations may be due to different versions of Windows - I have XP SP3.  I consider that ~graffiti deserves 10 points for his answer!!!  I worked for teo days trying to fix thi so I can doemload legal files from PACER without having to pay their fees for my case files.

Something to try.

Uninstall Nitro. Maybe a wee bit drastic but it ought to get the job done eh.

Or, can't you select a PDF with the file browser then go to the context menu and get into an "open with" dialog to select Adobe Reader as the default application?

Or, open Adobe Reader and go into the application's Preferences (under "Edit").
Select the Category "General".
To the right, down towards the bottom, click the button "Select Default PDF Handler".

Be well...

Hi

The problem posed by SLOlady 7th Feb 2015 is something very similar to my own problem.  But what makes matters worse is when Nitro is removed from system it leaves behind a bigger problem as it will convert all the documents and files that have an adobe extn into a type of word document but word cannot read or open a pdf file.  So any idea as to how my files can be returned to an adobe readable file.  Even current adobe files sent as an email attachment are automatically converted to a form of word document even though Nitro is no longer on my computer. My o.s. is win 7

Regards

David

I had the same question!  In Windows 7 - Default Programs - go to 'Associate a file type or protocol with a program' - scroll to .pdf (highlight it) - choose 'Change Program' and you can choose Adobe there.
