How do you open a pdf when you don't have an internet connection?

I frequently work in areas with no internet access and need to be able to open pdf files. After updating to Reader DC I can't open anything, old files/ new files without internet and my browser. How do I open the files I need? I tried going back to my old version pre- DC, but can't recover it.

Thanks

Are the pdf files on the computer? If so, what exactly happens when you open Reader and use File>Open to open the files?

They are files on my laptop. I'm not sure why, but now I'm not having issues opening every file I need access to. I turned off my wireless and files I had issues with are opening as they should in my browser. If I encounter the problem out in the field again, I'll be more careful to get better information and will come back to the forum. Thanks for your help.
