How to de-corrupt a .tmp file

How do I de-corrupt/recover a .tmp file? It is a day and a half before the final chapter of my master's thesis is due, and Reader crashed on me today. I have had auto-save on, but upon reloading the application, all of my notes and highlights were gone for at least 10 large documents. The autosave folder was empty, nothing to repair file or application wise, no other places things were saved, nothing. It was like I had never opened these documents before. After running time machine on my mac, I was able to find some .tmp files in a backup a couple of hours before the crash, but they are corrupted and will not open on any old or new version of Adobe Reader or Acrobat or any other application on Windows or Mac. If anyone happens to have any advice, you would be such a godsend. Otherwise, guess I'm powering through. Thanks all for thinking this through. Adobe, you have taken about 10 years off my life... incredibly disappointed.

If anyone knows if there is a separate cache for highlights and comments and how to find it, that would be equally amazing.
