Internet Explorer freezes when viewing embedded PDFs

Explorer ,
Jun 26, 2019 Jun 26, 2019

Hello,

I'm not sure if this is a new issue or an existing one that is ongoing, but we have a handful of users in our environment that experience an issue where Internet Explorer will freeze when launching an embedded PDF to view within the browser. It appears to be inconsistent and often times when the issue happens, the PDF appears like it will load but it will show the blue progress bar and become stuck on "Initializing". Has anyone encountered this before and if so, have you found a fix for the issue?

Thanks.

Hi Jonathonr,

As mentioned, you are experiencing trouble viewing PDF on on IE its freezing. Have you tried with any other web browser, is that freezes too?

Here are some troubleshooting steps suggested, to display PDFs in browser properly and Troubleshoot viewing PDF on the web. You may refer to the steps and let us know if that helps-

Troubleshoot viewing PDF files on the web

Display PDF in browser Adobe Acrobat, Acrobat Reader

Please do share the exact version of Adobe Reader and IE you have installed on your machine? Check if there's any update is pending.

Thanks,

Akanchha

Unfortunately, the site that we utilize this feature with is a legacy website and therefore, only functions in Internet Explorer. As a result, we have not tried with any other browsers.

Adobe Acrobat Reader DC Version: 2019.012.20035

Internet Explorer Version: 11.2906.14393.0

I'll try the steps in the articles you posted and see if they help.

Hi Akki,

any news on this?

Our users report the exact same issue for the latest Adobe Reader versions

- 2019.021.20061

- 2019.021.20058

Adobe Reader crashes frequently and is therefore not usable at all.

Hey @Akki_24,

Do you have any new information regarding this issue? My organisation is also experiencing issues similar to those described by jonathonr and EndlDa with no real solution provided.

The standard response of go to this link, use Adobe cleaner, uninstall, update are all things many people (including) myself have tried. But it makes no difference.

I'm investigating the option of rolling back to a previous version, but this isn't really something anyone should have to do.

The exact same issue here. Our obvervations so far:

- Problems started with V19.012.20034 and persists under V19.012.20035, V19.012.20036, V19.012.20040.

- Rollback to V19.010.20099 solves the issue.

- When the problems occurs, there is a Adobe Acrobat Reader DC Background Process eating 100% CPU on one core.

- Killing IE via Task Manager also kills the Adobe Acrobat Reader DC Background Process. Afterwards PC works normally until the next occurence.

Please advise.

It also work to just kill the Adobe Acrobat Reader process eating the CPU (it close the IE tab trying to open the PDF without killing the entire IE process).

Been trying to uninstall Adobe Reader and reinstall without success. I know I could just disable the adobe reader component on some computers and worked (at least it open in reader instead of within the browser). But now its not listed in components so I cant figure out how to stop opening PDF within the browser.

Adding a "us too" here - hard, if impossible to reproduce, but PDF will start to open then stall.  Calling application (which currentlly uses embedded IE) will hang until we kill one of the Acrobat processes that will be running at a full CPU (so 40-50% on our standard Dual Core PC)

OK - early testing seems to indicate that by unticking Preferences>>Security (extended)>>Run in AppContainer we fix this issue.

If anyone else tries this sucessfully please report back

Can you please explain further on what the process is for the solution?  I am having the same issue, but I don't know if internet explorer is too far out of date, and my Adobe reader version is too new.

Windows 10 Enterprise

  • Internet Explorer Version 1909 (OS Build 18363.1977)
  • Adobe Version 2021.011.20039

I am also using Master Control for work and it crashes, if I use the 'Wave' browser.  ðŸ™‚

Any help is appreciated!
