I am using Adobe Acrobat Reader DC for mac and am having an issue with the find text function. When I search a word, a large blue bond appears around the word (see photo), instead of highlighting the 'searched word' as usual. When I select next, it will only move a word at a time and not jump to the next 'searched word' in the document.

Hello Ben-e-boi,
We're sorry for the trouble you had with the Find feature in Adobe Reader. Can you use the select tool to select the text in the PDF document? If not, it means the documents are scans and it does not contain any text to search for.
Have you tried searching in other PDF? If not, please try with another PDF file? What is the dot version of Adobe Reader installed? To identify refer to Identify the product and its version for Acrobat and Reader DC
Try the suggestion from the following Adobe article Blue Box Outline appears when using Find Functionality
Is it a Mac or Windows machine and what is the version? Make sure that you have the latest version of Adobe Reader installed, check for any pending updates from help>check for updates, reboot the machine after updating Adobe Reader.
Try resetting the Adobe Reader's Preferences once and reboot the machine, to reset the Preferences, refer to How to reset Acrobat Preference settings to default.
If it is specific to one PDF, is it possible to share the PDF file with us? To share the file, please use Adobe Send feature, login to https://cloud.acrobat.com/send using your Adobe ID(email) and password, upload the file, share the link to files via private message only,How Do I Send Private Message
Let us know how it goes and share your observation.
Thanks,
Anand Sri.
