Question

....it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged ....

Hi all. I'm getting frustrated beyond words. I have been chasing a 'common' error code (see subject line), for over a year, have previously posted but to no avail. This error code IS an issue within Adobe DC programming, as I can fix it by cutting Abode out of the loop and using competitor programs, or by using a web browser. Being admin in multiple social media groups, my basic IT skills are required to help those with little tech knowledge to access digital media. Specifically, papercrafting images, backgrounds and sheets from multiple papercrafting supplier companies, who use USB's to carry their media to their customers. Given the obvious risk of deletion, these items are 'locked' by the writers. After extensive research this occurs predominantly when a user attempts to acces a pdf file on this 'locked' media. I can erradicate the 'error' if the user [1] Transfers the data to their PC drive; [2] Bypassed Adobe by using their web browser as default file handler; [3] Uses alternative free programs available online. As previously indicated, this is occuring on mutiple brands, and multiple OS, and multiple security providers, therefore the only 'common' factor is Adobe, and locked media. I have yet to encounter one of these conditions that I have not been able to advise a user to fix. I have a theory that Adobe may be trying to 'bookmark' the file, and because it's available to 'write to' Adobe is throwing the error??

Possibly worth a software engineer looking at this to resolve.

Any feedback would be more than welcome

Kevin

Hello, I am still having this problem, here in 2025! I have loaded FoxitPDF  Editor but that won't work, converting it times out. Nor does opening with my browser, nothing opens. Any other suggestions? Thanks in advance

Hi @laurieo18450377,

Hope you are doing well. Sorry for the trouble with opening files on Acrobat.

We would like to understand how you are opening the file. Is this a file downloaded and saved on your local storage drive or are you opening the file from an attachment on outlook/ downloading from web.

Can you try the steps mentioned in the thread here: https://adobe.ly/3F28LHq.

This discussion is on a similar topic to yours, and could be helpful.

If not, please share the below details for us to investigate further:

1. The app version of Acrobat you are using (go to Menu > Help > About Acrobat);

2. The OS [Windows/Mac] and its version;

3. A screen recording of the entire event;

4. A sample file where you experience the issue.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Regards,
Souvik.

Hi there

Hope you are doing well and sorry to hear that.

Please go through the correct answer marked in the similar discussion https://community.adobe.com/t5/adobe-acrobat-online-discussions/cannot-open-pdf-file-says-not-supported-or-file-is-damaged-help/td-p/10039410 and see if that works for you.

I respect that this is 'silmilar' but it isn't the same. I believe that this is a 'error' code beinbg thrown by the program engine, as it has no other response to give. As indicated I have remotely resolved these issues in ALL cases by using the workarounds above. It occurs on Win 7.1 through to 11, and is still apparent on the latest version of DC. This has definitely something to do with Adobe's handling of pdf files on a locked device, now whether it is because the files are created by a 'certain' graphics program I cannot say as my level of intervention is limited. All i can say is that it isn't affectinbg all users, but the only common factors I can identify is [1] using Adobe as default pdf reader; [2] reading 'pdf' file from a locked device, whilst through an 'Autorun' interface

I apppreciate your interest, and hope for some 'official' understanding of the issue. I am willing to provide media producers details etc if required, and am willing to ask permissions of said producers assistance if this is relevant

It fails in Autorun.

Are you able to open the file on the locked device, in Reader, using File > Open?

Are you able to double click on the file on the locked device, and have it open in Reader?
