I'm currently writing my dissertation. I need to have more than 50 PDF files open at once as I have over 100 references so far and I expect far more. Is there any way to open more than 50 files in the same window, each document with its own tab?
There's no way to control or change the limit.

How ridiculous to limit the number of files one can open at the same time. Clearly nobody on your development team has ever had to do any research--either as an academic OR to develop products that people can actually use.

I concur. It's not like it's 1997 and the PC freezes after 50 files. Sometimes I need to have 100 files open.

It's not ridiculous at all, when users use shared session hosts in the cloud or on premise, a user who opens 50 documents with a server with limited RAM, it can be a huge problem. PDF's are memory intensive and some of the worst optimized types of files to ever exist.
Hello, I'm hoping that this will be addressed at some point - the rationale for rate limiting open files from application itself seems inexplicable. It makes some project management tasks extraordinarily difficult. Would it be possible to implement as a paid feature?

I suppose its limited because tools like combine open files would struggle with more than 50.
One way might be to combine files into groups of 50 then each file would be worth 50 files?
