I am trying to upload a PDF that I downloaded from an internet site to our own website.  When I try to do so - and download from our site I get this error message:

I can see the PDF on my computer - I have Adobe Reader installed - why can't I see if from the front end of my website?

Looks like you are trying to open the pdf in a web browser. Be aware that many web browsers use their own pdf viewer which can cause this "error" message. This mostly happens to dynamic forms (basic pdf files are normally fine). The only way around it is to download the pdf without trying to open in the browser then open in Reader.
