pdf's open with a squared paper background

Anyone had this or know how to fix it?  Started a couple of days ago and now all my pdf's open looking like they are on squared paper on screen.  it doesn't affect the printing but it looks really weird on screen.

In the preferences disable the entry "Show transparency grid".

Thanks - but is wasn't on.  I discovered under view - show/hide - rulers and grids

Looks like that you use Adobe Acrobat. Why did you post the question in the forum for Acrobat Reader?
