PDF text appears wrong on my computer but OK on another

I have received a PDF file from someone in an email and when I open the file from the email or after saving to hard disk, it appears like this in Acrobat Reader DC:

pdf-bad.jpg

But if I open it on another computer in our office then it appears correctly in Acrobat Reader DC as:

pdf-good.jpg

In my office two computers show as mine and three can open the file OK. The two computers also have "Acrobat X Pro" installed and so also have 'Adobe PDF' printer driver. One of these computers is Windows 8.1 and the other Windows 10.

The three that load the file OK, are using different versions of Acrobat Reader and different versions of Windows.

Any help in seeing what settings may cause this display error.

I have checked the page display settings and they are both the same. Both computers have the same default printer. But mine has Acrobat X Pro and I wonder if that is having an effect. Both are set to use local fonts.

What happens when you disable the use of local fonts?

No difference. I have tried many settings in Reader DC and X Pro and nothing seems to fix it. I work for a software company and make PDF files and work with them and our software makes PDF files but I have never seen this problem before. I have seen poor quality text or screen rendering but not completely wrong text. It does look like the text is in the right place on the page but its not just the wrong font but appears to be different characters. I will try removing Reader DC and re-installing it. Do you know if having Acrobat X Pro on the same computer would have any effect? Is there some debug or logs in Acrobat when loading files?

If I copy the text from the screen and paste into other software then the text is pasting correctly so it is a visual problem in Reader DC. So its not a document font error but a visual font issue.

It looks the same in Acrobat X Pro. If I open in Windows 8 'PDF Reader' it looks strange there too but different than Acrobat.

If I import the PDF file into other software it is OK. I also have Adobe Photoshop 6 on my computer.

We have just discovered this identical issue at one of our detached offices at work.  Multiple computers with an issue viewing a PDF email attachment that, on other computers in the same or other offices, appear correctly

I will post more as I discover more.
